Disneyland Day 1 – Travel

It has been 18 years since I was last in Disneyland, and needless to say, it’s been much too long. My sister and I were very fortunate that her school break, and my teaching break aligned perfectly in February, so that we could have a lovely holiday in Disneyland!

Our travels started at 4:30 in the morning when we left for the airport. We were on our way to Vancouver by 7:00am, and then after a two hour layover, we left for Santa Ana at 11:00am. I had the window seat, and it was quite a delight to see the terrain change below me as the plane flew down the West Coast. It’s quite frosty in Calgary in February, so it was especially delightful to see the ocean, and the beautiful palm trees, as we descended into the airport.

As soon as we had landed and retrieved our luggage from the baggage claim, we headed outside to catch our hotel shuttle. As the automatic doors opened, we were immediately, and pleasantly encompassed by the warm sunshine, and the humid air of California. It was a welcome change from the arid cold of Calgary in winter, and we basked in the sun as we waited about 10 minutes for our hotel shuttle.

We stayed at the Fairfield Inn Anaheim Resort by Marriott, which felt very ‘full circle’, because it was the hotel we’d stayed during our 1998 Disneyland trip! Our room was ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ themed, which was delightful, and it was on the top floor, so it was nice and quiet.

We settled into our room, and then went in search of dinner. Originally we had been quite concerned about the price of food, particularly because the CAD was quite weak against the USD (about 75 cents to the USD), so we found a pharmacy and got a box of cheerios and some milk. Our room came with a mini fridge which was wonderful because it meant we could have breakfast very reasonably!

It was lovely to walk along South Harbor Boulevard as the sun settled into the golden hour, framing the palm trees, and. There was a slight breeze, but the air was warm, and humid.

We went to bed quite early, exhausted from a long day of travel, and excited to begin our Disneyland adventure the next morning!
